Who is Spencer Hill?
Spencer Hill is the founder and lead engineer of The Portland Company. He has 20+ years of professional software experience (since 2005) across web, mobile, AI, and blockchain. He has personally architected and shipped multiple in-house products including Focus: Finance, Focus: Forge, Village X, and Politogy: VRM, alongside hundreds of client engagements ranging from early-stage startups to enterprise clients.
Do you work with startups?
Yes. A large share of our engagements are with early-stage startups — from pre-seed founders shipping their first MVP to Series A teams scaling their second product. We are comfortable wearing multiple hats, moving fast, and operating with limited specs. Typical startup engagements run 4–12 weeks for a v1 launch, followed by ongoing retainers that adapt to product-market-fit iteration cycles.
Do you build AI agents?
Yes. We've been shipping LLM-powered features in production for 3+ years and build autonomous and semi-autonomous agents on top of Claude, GPT, and Gemini. We handle the full stack: prompt design, RAG/vector retrieval with pgvector or Pinecone, function calling, tool use, multi-step orchestration, streaming UIs, evaluation pipelines, and cost/latency monitoring. Focus: Forge is our flagship in-house example of an agentic project and inbox manager.
Do you build blockchain apps?
Yes. We build smart contracts, dApps, DeFi protocols, NFT minting platforms, and DAO governance tooling on Ethereum, Solana, Base, and other major chains. Stack includes Solidity, Hardhat/Foundry, Anchor for Solana, ethers.js/viem, Wagmi, and The Graph. Every contract ships with test coverage and is prepared for third-party audit. Typical Web3 engagements run 4–12 weeks per protocol.
Where are you located?
The Portland Company is based in Portland, Oregon, in the United States. We work remotely with clients worldwide and have shipped projects with teams across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. We can collaborate across most time zones and are happy to do periodic in-person workshops for Pacific Northwest clients.
Do you work with enterprises?
Yes. We work with established companies on modernization projects, AI/LLM rollouts, internal tooling, customer portals, and mobile companion apps. We're comfortable with security reviews, NDAs, vendor onboarding, SOC 2-aligned development practices, and integration with existing internal systems. Enterprise engagements typically run longer (3–9 months) and often include knowledge transfer and on-site or hybrid workshops.
What sets The Portland Company apart?
Three things. First, depth: 20+ years (since 2005) of shipping production software across web, mobile, AI, and blockchain — not theoretical knowledge. Second, breadth: a single team that can take you from a Next.js marketing site to a native iOS app to an LLM agent to a Solidity contract without handoffs between vendors. Third, ownership: we build our own products (Focus: Finance, Focus: Forge, Village X, Politogy: VRM), so we know what it takes to ship and maintain real software, not just deliver projects.
